Dead Pixel Warranty

Dead Pixel Warranty: How Many Pixels Grant a Replacement?

Finding a dead pixel on a new monitor or smartphone can be frustrating. However, not every dead pixel means a direct return or a free panel replacement. Here are the criteria that define brands' warranty policies:

What are ISO 9241-307 Standards?

Most display manufacturers worldwide use the ISO 9241-307 standard to determine screen quality and defect tolerance. This standard categorizes screens into "Classes":

  • Class 0: Zero tolerance. Even a single dead or stuck pixel is a cause for replacement. Usually found in military or medical devices.
  • Class 1: The most common consumer class. Generally, up to 1 to 5 pixel defects can be considered "normal".

Warranty Policies of Brands

Manufacturers (Samsung, LG, Dell, Apple, etc.) usually look for the following conditions for warranty processing:

  • Quantity Limit: Many brands require at least 3 to 5 dead pixels for a panel replacement.
  • Location Factor: If the dead pixel is in the exact center of the screen, some manufacturers may replace it regardless of the count.
  • Pixel Type: The warranty weight of "Dead" (black) pixels versus "Stuck" (colored) pixels may differ.

Status on Mobile Devices (Dead Pixel Test Phone)

On smartphones, since pixel density (PPI) is very high, manufacturers usually apply stricter rules. A visible dead pixel on a modern smartphone often falls directly into the "defective product" category.
